Idea and development: By campers for campers

Around summer 2015, Friedrich and Kathrin started looking for a camping trailer for themselves and their young family: it should be compact, but offer a spacious living area with comfortable beds and plenty of storage space. It should have a large loading space and be easy to handle - i.e. quick to load, easy to park and manoeuvre and quick to assemble and disassemble.

During a walk around a campsite on holiday in Tuscany in 2017, Friedrich discovers a camping family who have stowed all their luggage in a box trailer. This gave him the idea for a mini caravan that unfolds from such a box trailer. Immediately afterwards, he sits down on the terrace and draws his first sketches on the inside of a biscuit packet. In the days, weeks and months that followed, he researched, planned, drew and built models - and sought and found partners in Unsinn Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH and Mayr Planen und Zelte, who joined him in building the first farfalla camper flap 4 after the founding of farfalla camper concept UG in summer 2018. Friedrich and his family travelled with it for the first time at Easter 2019.

Friedrich sells the first mini caravans at the first trade fairs in 2020 - and collects lots of ideas from the many enthusiastic visitors to the stand. This resulted in many model variants in the following years. The first panoramic flap was followed by trailers with a washbasin and separate toilet, with roof tent preparation or optimised for motorbike transport. Friedrich combines the ideas of visitors to the trade fair stand with the experience that he, Kathrin - herself a camper from an early age - and their sons have gathered. This results in the first farfalla camper flap beach chair at the end of 2021, the first farfalla camper flip in 2023 and the first flip up in 2025.

Friedrich and his family are still travelling a lot with one farfalla camper or another. Our own experiences, the experiences of the numerous farfalla campers, the ideas of trade fair visitors and the expertise of our partner companies are decisive for us in fine-tuning the farfalla camper flip and flap model families. The aim is to improve the functionality and design of our camping trailers without compromising on quality. The basic ideas that also applied to the first farfalla camper remain unaffected: Compact external dimensions, comfortable living space and a generous load space with a loading concept and easy handling.

Manufacture: Made in Germany

Since the company was founded in 2018, we have been working with partner companies that have been established on the market for decades. They manufacture the key components of our mini caravans for us: the base vehicles, tent construction components and upholstery are manufactured in Bavaria to the highest quality standards, we source the milled multiplex panels for the furniture construction from the Black Forest, and the Euro containers used are also produced in southern Germany. All the components come together at our premises in Neufahrn, north of Munich, where we assemble the furniture, join the components together and finally equip the finished farfalla camper with the desired accessories. It usually takes around four months from order to completion.

The location of our partner companies in our neighbourhood has many advantages for us: The distances are short, the arrangements are simple, and we are awake at the same time. This helps us to offer you a high-quality, robust, well-balanced and mature product in the form of the farfalla camper.

Unsinn Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH: Partner for our base vehicles

With innovative trailers, roll-off tippers and special construction solutions made in Germany, Unsinn Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH has established itself as a specialist for customised solutions on the international market. Starting out 65 years ago as a blacksmith's workshop with the construction of the first agricultural trailers, the company now has around 280 employees and produces more than 10,000 quality vehicles every year for customers from industry and trade in Germany and abroad.

With their series approvals and tried-and-tested components, the farfalla camper base vehicles by Unsinn Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH, which are packed with customised solutions, ensure that our camping trailers can be easily approved throughout Europe!

Commitment to bees, butterflies & co: farfalla camper cares

We love being in nature - and we want to preserve it! Among the many things that need to be done to achieve this, we have looked for something that we want to get involved in and that suits us well:

farfalla stands for butterfly, and butterflies are insects. Both the number of insects and the number of insect species have been declining drastically for several decades. Insects are kept by humans as livestock - such as the honey bee - and play a central role as plant pollinators and have an important function in the food chain. This is why the loss of insects is considered particularly problematic in ecology (source: Wikipedia.org).

The Netzwerk Blühende Landschaft Network, an initiative of Mellifera e. V., has always focused on the positive image of a flowering landscape for all pollinating insects. Pollinating insects include bees, butterflies, bumblebees, hoverflies, flies, wasps and beetles. In addition to changes in agricultural land use and the use of pesticides, the Netzwerk Blühende Landschaft cites light pollution and the isolation of habitats, which is promoted by the fragmentation of the landscape. Just like us with our camping trailers, insects need a network of paths to move through the landscape, meet and mix with each other. To promote this, the Flowering Landscape Network is working with the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Building and Transport to create a flowering insect infrastructure, for example in the ‘Bee Highways’ project. Butterflies benefit from this just as much as all other pollinating insects!

For every farfalla camper sold from July 2025, we will donate €100 to the Netzwerk Blühende Landschaft. Because not only we want to travel.

With €100, approx. 25-30 square metres of flowering meadow can be created. This corresponds roughly to the area of a built farfalla camper.

Founded in 2003 on the initiative of Mellifera e. V., the Netzwerk Blühende Landschaft works with beekeepers, farmers, conservationists, gardeners, local authorities and scientists as equals. They develop concepts and projects for more floral diversity and better habitats for flower-pollinating insects in all parts of the cultivated landscape.
